Form I-9 and E-Verify compliance is more complex than the online videos from DHS suggest. They cover the basics, but hundreds of technicalities are left out, from what a non-citizen national is to when an H-1B worker changing jobs can start with a new employer and which documents prove authorization. Many rules aren't spelled out in the law or USCIS regulations at all.

ICE has stepped up audits of companies suspected of hiring unauthorized workers, and employers can be fined even when every employee is authorized to work. This 60-minute webinar reviews the penalties ICE and the Office of Special Counsel (OSC) can impose, paper versus electronic I-9s, the form's smart features, and the missteps employers commonly make.

  • Conduct a self-audit of your I-9s and I-9 practices
  • Complete Form I-9 correctly and avoid common mistakes
  • Verify documents lawfully without asking for too much
  • Handle reverification, returning workers and automatically extended EADs
  • Copy, store, retain and purge I-9s correctly, on paper or electronically
  • Determine when E-Verify is voluntary and when it is mandatory

  • Paper vs electronic I-9 forms and the form's smart features

If an I-9 is completed incorrectly, the employer carries the blame. This session helps you build reliable practices for completing, verifying, storing and auditing I-9s, and for asking for enough documentation without requesting too much.

It is for anyone who completes or signs Form I-9, including HR, payroll and accounting managers, CFOs and controllers, employers and business owners, and E-Verify users.
