DHS changed how employers verify employment eligibility when it updated Form I-9 and created an alternative procedure for E-Verify employers. This 90-minute Form I-9 and E-Verify webinar explains what those changes mean in practice.

Employers who use E-Verify and are in good standing may examine identity and work authorization documents remotely, through electronic review and a live video call, instead of in person. Employers that don't use E-Verify had to return to physical document examination when the COVID-19 flexibilities ended, including for documents reviewed remotely during the pandemic.

You'll learn the requirements of the remote option, how to use the Additional Information field, how to review IDs, and how an internal audit and staff training make compliance easier.

  • Explain the changes to Form I-9 and its instructions
  • Determine whether your organization can use the E-Verify remote document review option
  • Meet the mandatory requirements of the alternative procedure, including Additional Information field entries
  • Review identity and work authorization documents correctly, in person or remotely
  • Handle follow-up review of documents examined under COVID-19 flexibilities
  • Run an internal I-9 audit and train staff on the requirements

  • The updated Form I-9 and its instructions
  • Other changes on the form
  • Transition rules between form editions
  • How long the form edition can be used and when the I-9 manual (M-274) applies
  • Other requirements tied to the DHS E-Verify decision
  • What to note on the form when using the E-Verify option
  • Mandatory requirements for the alternative procedure
  • Best practice for re-reviewing documents examined remotely during COVID-19 flexibilities
  • Using the Additional Information field for document review and the E-Verify remote option
  • Reviewing documents that differ from the original IDs used
  • Reviewing IDs effectively to meet requirements
  • Whether hybrid workforces qualify
  • Options for reviewing documents remotely, including whether a notary helps
  • Conducting an internal audit to ease the changes
  • Why staff training is critical

Remote document review gives E-Verify employers flexibility, but only if they follow its requirements. Mistakes on the form or in document review can create I-9 violations for any employer.

The webinar suits all employers and their representatives, business owners, company leaders, compliance and HR professionals, and managers and supervisors in every industry.
