Tattoos were once linked to sailors, marines and bikers. Over recent decades, body art has become more accepted at work, yet highly visible tattoos and piercings can still carry a negative image, especially in customer-facing roles. Many professionals cover them, at least until they are established.

Gender identity and expression raise harder questions. Many workplaces remain unsure what is appropriate and how to handle the employee relations issues that arise, and personal decisions are often shaped by religious beliefs, experience and the media.

This 60-minute webinar looks at where an employee's right to self-expression meets the employer's right to set boundaries, what an acceptable and legal dress policy looks like, and employers' legal obligations on gender identity.

  • Balance employee self-expression with legitimate employer boundaries
  • Draft an acceptable and legal dress and appearance policy
  • Recognize the workplace issues around gender orientation and identity
  • Explain employers' legal obligations on gender identity

  • Changing attitudes to tattoos, piercings and body art at work
  • How employees manage visible tattoos and piercings in professional settings
  • When an employee's right to self-expression interferes with the employer's right to set boundaries
  • What an acceptable and legal dress policy looks like
  • Issues around gender orientation and gender identity at work
  • Employers' legal obligations to employees with gender identity concerns

Dress and appearance policies that go too far can create legal and employee relations problems, while unclear ones leave managers guessing. This session helps you strike a balance that respects self-expression and business needs.
